Mark Siano
www.marksianoartwork.blogspot.com

Mark Siano is a Seattle based artist who works primarily in creating ink representations of nature. A self-proclaimed “Sharpie Artist”, Siano uses the iconic black markers to illustrate the branches, bramble, and the twisting entanglements that dominate the Pacific Northwest Landscape. In addition to the swirling and snarl silhouettes that have become the artist’s trademark, Mr. Siano is also greatly influenced by the stylized patterns of early art nouveau. Inspired by the famous works of Mucha, Beardsley, and Gaudi, Mark likes to take a darker twist on the beauty of nature.

“There is beauty in grain silos, old fences, rusted metal, sea grass, waves on the sound, an old canoe on the beach, friends, a weathered dock, beach sand and a retreating wave. Being by the salt water has a certain feeling to it. Landscapes and structures by the water have a certain draw. There is a tension between the natural coast and the human invented coast, and I find both what nature creates and what humans create beautiful. This collection of photos highlights images at the coast, which struck me as beautiful and remind me of that wonderful feeling of being by the water.” -Katrina Beach

Joe Zagorski and Kanako Sato

February 4th, 2011
6:00-9:00pm

“Floating World Hallucinations 浮世幻覚”
Joint exhibition of recent works by acclaimed artists Joe Zagorski and Kanako Sato.

This exhibit includes the newest series of evocative watercolor images from Joe Zagorski and effervescent multi-media pieces from Kanako Sato. That makes this an evocatively effervescent exhibit! Add free booze, and it makes its own sauce. Communicating through a vocabulary of illustrative, narrative based imagery, Zagorski’s works irreverently explore themes of religious iconography, nature, and intoxication. Heavy on pattern, line, and composition, there is an explicit stylistic reference to Ukiyo-e, with the particular treatment of dimension and depth associated with that genre.

Kanako Sato will be showing works that reflect her childhood growing up surrounded by packaging materials and plastic.
Bren’s imperfect doll-like figurative work represents a sense of re-birth and ascension to a spiritual place free from the imposed bonds of vanity and perfection, religious dogma, and attitudes of intolerance.

Rabbit Stew String Band is an Old Time trio of fiddle, guitar, and banjo, playing community music that filled grange halls, barns, and front porches at the start of the last century. With tunes that carry names like “Shove That Pigs Foot a Little Further Into the Fire” and “Jaybird Died of a Whooping Cough”, your brain might wonder at the origins of this stuff, but your feet will know exactly what to do. Toe tapping guaranteed!

The mission of Youth in Focus is to empower urban teens, through photography, to experience their world in new ways and make positive changes in their lives. Youth in Focus gives local youth the opportunity to express themselves visually in a supportive environment. Classes with Youth in Focus ignite the imagination and provide valuable life and work skills. We believe that every child deserves the chance to be creative. Photography is an ideal tool to engage and inspire young people who are struggling in their lives. Students are encouraged by the tangible results they quickly achieve in darkroom classes. The nature of photography uniquely combines instant gratification with the potential to endlessly rework an image to perfection. Our goal is not merely to train our students as photographers, but to prepare them for successful lives. We do this by teaching them transferable skills and engaging them with a network of caring adults.

“Surprising Iran and the Middle East”

I have always loved images captured by a camera. As a child growing up on a small Texas farm I would spend summers poring over National Geographic, Life, and Look magazines. I dreamt one day I would have the opportunity to visit far off locations shown in these magazines and to take my own photos.

Today these dreams are coming true. I am fortunate to travel throughout the world meeting people from many different places, such as Iran and the Middle East. At each location I try to capture images that tell a story and provide the viewer with a perspective into others’ lives and provide a sense of wonder about the world.

September 3rd, 2010
6:00-9:00pm
Ray Weisgerber photography art exhibit

The photographs included in Ray Weisgerber’s show at Studio R combine an appreciation of the natural world in all its chaotic forms, while at the same time satisfying an innate interest in logical order and structure. The subjects—rocks, trees, and flowers—are multiplied and wrapped into perfect symmetry, creating a hyper-natural world. The results are strangely familiar and also fascinatingly surreal, spiritual, magical, and compelling.

Viewers have unique reactions to these photos, often including the discovery of images within the images, and oftentimes faces. The puzzling nature of these images may cause the viewer to look for familiarity and rationality. Some say there is a strong, universal need in man to form order out of chaos, and these images seem to explore and titillate that need.

Besides all that, they are beautiful, well-crafted images created in black-and-white format, demonstrating the photographer’s skills in his combination of both traditional and digital media.
